Michele Jones Galvin

This Year's Speaker

Michele Jones Galvin

Author of Beyond the Underground:
Aunt Harriet, Moses of Her People

Michele Jones Galvin is a first time author and self-publisher from Syracuse.

Michele began collaborating with her mother, Joyce Jones, in 1999. Her mother’s fondest wish was to write a book on her family ties to Harriet Tubman. Michele assisted her mother with compiling family research and writing, Beyond the Underground: Aunt Harriet, Moses of Her People. The story is an intricate mix of family lore, memoir, and historical reconstruction. In the Centennial Anniversary Year of Harriet Tubman’s death, her descendants published and released in their book in November 2013.

As time was of the essence, the mother-daughter duo decided to shift their efforts from obtaining a traditional publisher to lying the foundation to self-publish. As a result, Michele Jones Galvin established Sankofa Media, a small press publishing company.

We are pleased to be able to offer her book for sale at the Book Lovers' Ball.
